Clinically: By palpation an astute clinician appreciates the difference in anatomical location which can be subtle as the proximity of the two is obvious, diagnostic testing such as MRI would differentiate. But, kep in mind treatment can be similiar, so if you go into a cam walker boot you should heal either and don't really have to know which it is. Tendonitis is the more common of the two.
