A member asked:

How can you diagnose and treat measles?

Varies: There are some physicians who trained when there was enough measles to recognize it from clinical presentation. There are also available blood tests to confirm or exclude the diagnosis. Treatment is primarily supportive with rest, fluids, nutrition etc while they self heal. Additional measures focus on complications as they arise, like treating secondary pneumonia.

Clinical exam/tests: For those who trained in an era where measles was common, diagnosis by history and physical exam is possible, but many providers today have never seen a case in the US and clinical suspicion needs to be confirmed by blood tests.Treatment is supportive, through the high fevers and multi-system complications. The worst cases are hospitalized for fluids and immuno-therapy.
