A member asked:

My mum was diagnosed with shingles yesterday and tomorrow my daughter is due to give birth to my new grandson. can he get shingles from her?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Unlikely: If your daughter had chickenpox or the vaccine as a kid, her immunity will pass to baby in the womb and provide the infant with protection for a month or so. Shingles patients do not pass the germ in saliva or a cough, only from the lesions.Covering the sores and normal hand washing prevents spread of the germ.A susceptible person would get chickenpox from exposure, not shingles.
