After surgery: Side effects after esophagectomy (removal of esophagus and replacement with the stomach) for cancer include weight loss, reflux, loss of appetitie, and feeling full (early satiety). Reflux is because the sphincter between the esophagus and stomach is removed. Keys to avoid those side effects are sleeping at 30 to 40 degree angle. And eating 6 small meals a day instead of 3 large meals.
