Is tramadol considered a strong or weak painkiller ? i've heard both before.

Tramadol: It is neither. It is considered for moderate type of pain. It acts just like any opiate medication and acts at the same sites as morphine. Additionally it also has other mechanisms of action. It can also be addictive just like other opiates.
