Birth injury: It is very common to have a vaginal tear with delivery. We commonly prescribe narcotics in the US for pain control for this injury even in breast feeding women. It usually takes 3-6 weeks for this to heal if it is repaired adequately, longer if it is left to heal on its own. Other options include sits baths, ice, local heat, and topical anesthetics.
