Neuromodulation: ECT, VNS (Vagal Nerve Stimulation) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation of the brain are safe and effective treatments for brain conditions like major depression. ECT is done with with patient under anesthesia. A small amount of electricity is carefully applied to the scalp as to produce a brief seizure. This can bring someone out of severe depression or mania. Better than Prozac (fluoxetine)? Sometimes.
