A member asked:

Why would a gi specialist order an abdominal x-ray at the same time as abdominal ultrasound? what can x-ray show that u/s wouldn't? is it redundant?

Complimentary: Ultrasound is very good for evaluation of liver, gallbladder and to a lesser extent pancreas. Plain xray can evaluate bowel gas pattern and look for obstruction. CT (type of xray) can also evaluated for presence of masses and look at bowel pattern in more detail. CT not real good for evaluating gallstones. Thanks for trusting HealthTap!
