Menstrual period: Menstrual periods in a young woman are not uncommonly irregular. Stress, fatigue, hormone fluctuations, illness may result in irregular periods. Do not be alarmed about it. Your period may last longer or may become heavier as you get older - that is common as well. If you are sexually active, be sure to use a form of birth control to prevent unwanted pregnancy.

Brief periods: Periods at age 16 are frequently irregular, and the brown discharge may result from an immature follicle with poor progesterone hormone production. This may cause brief bleeding and brown discharge on occasion. If you are not at all sexually active, it is not serious at this point. If you are, a serum pregnancy test (HCG) should be performed.
