Probably primates: It is not known for sure, but it is felt that there is a reservoir of this virus in primates in Central West Africa. Others think it might be bats or some other small mammals. These animals are frequently eaten in that portion of the world and the virus might have spread in that way.

Not exactly clear.: One theory is that bats are the reservoir for Ebola. Partially eaten fruit dropped by bats may be eaten by Diuker antelopes, monkeys, apes or other mammals. Eating or handling bush meat from these animals can transmit the disease to humans. Dogs eating human carcasses or small mammals that are contaminated may also contribute to the spread. This critical issue is being studied .
