Why is benadryl (diphenhydramine) more effective for hives than allegra?

Antihistamines: some hives respond better to first generation antihistamines, but in general if the hives are chronic, they are better suppressed with a second generation antihistamine, such as Allegra (fexofenadine) or Zyrtec as they are longer acting and less sedating
