Broke bronchi: the middle to large tubes of the lung are bronchi. They can be bent/broken/popped by inflammation/infection/scarring. Then they not only don't work well, they cannot be cleared out of gunk. Gunk can collect in them and cause chronic or repeated pneumonia. Often requires surgery to remove it.
