i have extreme stomach pains. pain area is from belly button and upward to top of stomach. any ideas what this might be?

Many possibilities: Extreme pain worries me. It could be ulcer, pancreatitis, bowel obstruction, gall bladder disease etc. You should seek medical care urgently!

Hmmm: Are you currently pregnant and if so, how far along? Usually pain in the area below the xiphoid and above the belly button comes from the stomach such as dyspepsia or ulcer or from the pancreas such as pancreatitis. I would see your doctor for exam and blood work. Sometimes gall bladder can cause pain centrally in the upper abdomen as well.
