36 strains: Easier to tell you what strains it protects against. There are 40 strains of HPV. Gardasil protects against 6,11,16 & 18. Cervarix protects against 16 & 18. Some studies have shown that there is some protection against the other strains as well ( which cause ~ 8% of cervical cancer)
