Good question: Successful treatments for trigeminal neuralgia began in the late 50's with the introduction of the medication Tegretol. Other seizure medications also work well. For medically refractory Trigeminal Neuralgia, micro-vascular decompression seems to have longer lasting efficacy than radio frequency ablation, gamma knife surgery or injections of alcohol.
