Can hamsters as pets contribute to pulmonary fibrosis?

Generally no.: The cause of pulmonary fibrosis is not known, but hamsters haven't been associated with it. Hypersensitivity pneumonitis can be caused by pet birds and lead to pulmonary fibrosis in rare cases.

Rarely : There is a rare condition called hypersensitivity pneumonitis or extrinsic allergic aveolitis that can be caused by exposure to hamsters and their feces. Usually this is from birds, but any animal can cause it if you have a proclivity and are exposed long enough. The cure is to remove the patient from the animal.

Unlikely: Allergies are more likely. Pulmonary fibrosis could possibly occur from hypersensitivity pneumonitis, but this hasn't been described.
