May be normal.: Lymph nodes sometimes swell and get painful without an obvious cause. When nodes are "stony" hard, very large or progressively increasing in size and number we try to find a source. Localized lymph edema (LA) is usually related to trauma or infection in the local area as your doc suggests. Generalized LA may represent HIV / TB or infectious mono.
