New period symdrome: It is very common for the initial periods in young girls to be irregular and occasionally heavy. However, this is a very good time to see the girl's Pediatrician to be sure that everything physically is O.K., so don't panic yet, Mom. Secondly, regularizing periods with the pill in 12 year olds is generally not done because the hormonal system is just trying to get started and the pill inhibits it.

I would do that,: starting your daughter on a low dose estrogen birth control pill with 24 days of hormone in it. She should have shorter and lighter periods, and less cramping. Is there breast cancer or ovarian cancer on your side in the family, though? If that is so, your daughter may want to establish a relationship with a gynecologist, who would monitor your daughter's health needs.

Probably: Birth control pills can generally provide effective treatment for dysfunctional uterine bleeding. Due to other mental health conditions and medications listed in the history provided, her pediatric physician should consult OB for managing this long term.
