What is called dropsy and what is it caused by?

Depends on cause: Dropsy is a term for generalized edema. It may be due to heart failure, liver and kidney disease, malnutrition etc. Other symptoms depend on the underlying pathology and may included respiratory trouble, jaundice, uremia etc.
