Toxoplasmosis: Most cats carry a parasite called toxoplasmosis. As adults, it's not usually a problem, but if a pregnant woman catches it and passes it to the baby, it can cause birth defects. It is recommended that pregnant women avoid handling cat litter in particular, because that is what is most contagious. If there is a cat in the house, the best precaution is for someone else to empty the catbox daily.

Cat feces: It is important not to handle cat feces during pregnancy. So let someone else clean out the litter box due to risk of transmission of Toxoplasmosis from cat feces. Also, don't keep the litter box close to a ventilation system.
