Many types.: There are 3 main types Type 1 - a complete absence of insulin Type 2 - a relative deficiency of insulin Gestational diabetes - induced by pregnancy. There are several other types but they represent a small proportion of cases. Among the minor types medication induced diabetes is perhaps the most common. See Wikipedia.

1 and 2: Type 1 is usually referred to as juvenile diabetes. It results from the pancreas not producing enough insulin. Type 2 diabetes results from our body developing insulin resistance, preventing the body from using the insulin and sugar it naturally has. Insulin resistance usually develops as a result of being overweight. It can develop in both adults and children.
