In the past physician's thought that it made the patient more susceptible to tubal infections(salpingitis) by driving vaginal bacteria through a more open cervix into the fallopian tube. Obviously, sex during this time may be somewhat uncomfortable with cramping or "messy' condom use and bed protection can be of benefit during this time.
