Hormones: Most of the symptoms of a period are caused by the hormonal changes. As long as the cyclic center in you brain is functioning and your ovaries are working, you will have cyclic changes. The bleeding is the result of estrogen making the lining of the uterus grow, progesterone making it stop growing and get mature, and then the falling level of progesterone resulting in the shedding of the lining.
