Many reasons: Brown discharge generally means there is some bleeding. This can be normal, a sign of pregnancy or less likely, a sign of an infection. If you are on birth control pills it is not uncommon to have a small amount of spotting that looks like brown discharge. If you are not trying to become pregnant make sure you are using protection. If it continues I would consult your provider.

How many weeks ago?: If your last period started 2 weeks ago, spotting or bleeding lightly is not uncommon with ovulation. If it started 3-5 weeks ago, I have found that alot of patients notice dark spotting just before their period starts. If it has been longer than that, a threatened miscarriage is possible. It could also be a symptom of a raw or irritated cervix ( cervicitis).
