Bacterial infection: Anthrax is a bacterial infection with three major types of manifestations, in order or severity, cutaneous, gastrointestinal and pulmonary. Pulmonary infection, once it becomes apparent as pneumonia is usually lethal. Gi type causes severe bloody diarrhea and skin forms presents as an ulcer with fever.

Anthrax: Mortality rate for skin acquired untreated anthrax is 10 to 20 % but very low w antibiotic therapy. Mortality rate for inhalation anthrax is 50 to 90 % even w antibiotic therapy. Mortality rate for gastrointestinal anthrax is about 50 % w antibiotic therapy. If meningitis occurs w anthrax infection it is usually fatal.
