Irregular periods: When periods are infrequent, the lining of the uterus becomes thickened and there can be overflow bleeding which can be heavy or prolonged with spotting. Normally, with ovulation, your ovaries begin secreting progesterone that matures the uterine lining and helps to shed the lining efficiently. Infrequent menses can be caused by thyroid or hormone imbalance, or PCOS. Your doctor can test.
