Light menstrual flow: If your period is just beginning, your flow may be light. Once it gets going, it could pick up. Blood may pool in the vagina before showing up on a pad. Depending on your "normal," as long as the rest of the period is not out of the ordinary, there is no need to worry. But, if you are concerned, take a pregnancy test.

Menstrual flow: The tampon is inserted inside the vagina which is close to the cervix where the menstrual flow comes from. So it goes directly into the tampon. The same amount of blood would actually come out.
