No: A low ferritin dose not cause hair loss, however in iron deficiency which leads to low ferritin patients may have hair loss. This can be observed in patients with iron deficiency without anemia.

Yes: A ferrtin of 17 is borderline low. Most labs would say 10 and below is low. But if you are having problems losing your hair, it is important to check ferritin and also tsh levels. Problems with either one could cause hair loss. You would most likely feel better with a ferritin of at least 30. I would consider more iron rich foods in your diet and consider ferrous gluconate supplement.
