Many: Diabetic retinopathy has until recently only been treated with laser and blood sugar control. In the last few years, treatment with steroid injections and a class of drugs called vegf inhibitors have improved treatment.

Diabetic retinopathy: For mild diabetic eye disease, no treatment is needed. For severe disease, patients may need laser or injections of medicine to stop the growth of abnormal blood vessels. For macular edema, treatments include laser and injections of medicine such as lucentis (ranibizumab). In all cases, tighter blood sugar control is essential.
