Viral: Rachel, The reason that the antibiotics are not working is that your sore throat is likely caused by a virus. The sores in your throat as well as the mucous production and cough are all symptoms of viral pharyngitis. The illness will last somewhere between 5-10 days. You can take medicine to treat the symptoms (like acetaminophen, ibuprofen, decongestants, and cough medicine). Hope this helps!
