Ovulation: The key to a woman's cycle is her ovulation. Not her menstruation. Sperm left in the vagina on any or all of the five days leading up to ovulation are the sperm that cause pregnancy. That means in a 28 day cycle days eight to thirteen are the days most likely for sperm to cause pregnancy. Day 14 is possible but slightly less likely.
