Good news: Having a Pap smear is important for most women. It can detect pre malignant cervix cancer early, when it is treatable before radical surgery is indicated. Another value of present day Pap smear is that the test analyzes whether HPV virus is present. If so it would require treatment or the patient would spread the virus to her partner. This could then have serious implications.

Good job!: It sounds like you girlfriend is taking care of her health. Routine gynecologic exams with PAP smears and HPV testing are recommended for women between the ages of 21-70. It is a screening test for precancerous changes to the cervix and if an abnormality was discovered close follow up is usually necessary.
