Possible infection: Menstrual blood has a pH of 7.4 and the vagina tries to maintain a pH of 4.0. A higher pH can allow bacterial overgrowth, especially if periods are heavy. If overgrowth is significant, bacterial vaginosis may result and the increased pH could inflame the labia minora. Sexual intercourse during menstrual periods could contribute as well.
