Dark blood:menstrual: Blood quickly turns dark, and if for example at age 44 your periods have less bleeding, a tampon or a pad may be worn a bit longer, which causes the blood to appear darker. This has nothing to do with "peri-menopause" or "pre-menopause". The average age of true menopause is 54. Irregular periods may start around late '30's but estrogen ceases to be made at about 54.
