Depends: on how you rip. A most tears also have to be repaired, An episiotomy controls the tear. Discuss with your OB.

I episiotomy: Where the episiotomy is more precise and controlled,the incision should be uniform and orderly compared to a tear which should aid the healing process.Of course your obstetrician would know best.
