Is there a cure for sickle cell disease?

Yes and no: There are advances in stem cell transplantation that are promising. If a candidate is healthy enough to go through the process, their existing immune system is cancelled out by strong drugs, and a bone marrow transplant is performed. The process is dangerous and there are many possible complications, including death.
