Ovary stretching: In order to make an egg, the ovary grows it inside a small pocket of fluid called a follicle. As the egg matures, the follicle enlarges & rises to the surface of the ovary. As it does so, it stretches the covering or "capsule" of the ovary. Any tissue stretching can cause pain. The surface of the ovary actually tears open as the egg is released, sometimes causing bleeding which can cause pain.
