Depends on symptoms: Pain on the side of the hip that hurts when touched or if you lay on it can be an inflamation of a bursa. Pain in your side in the groin with movement could be the hip joint, a ligament or an abdominal muscle depending on the area. if that is the only symptom. If there are other problems there are deeper structures that could be the problem and should be checked by a medical provider.

Bursitis: Hip joint pain is actually felt in the groin. Most people point to the outer aspect of the hip area when they say "hip pain" and that pain is typically greater trochanter bursitis. Over the counter anti inflammatory meds like ibuprofen or naproxen usually relieves this. If not see your doctor
