Codeine and diarrhea: Codeine phosphate is indicated for the treatment of acute diarrhea in adults. However, Codeine and other opiates should be reserved for more refractory cases of diarrhea. The mechanism is constipation due to the slowing of peristalsis in the GI system. The opioid receptors are found in the muscles lining the walls of the intestines and in the brain.
