Fight or Flight: Generally speaking, blood vessels constrict in response to a drop in blood pressure or stressors, which may constrict the peripheral blood vessels in an effort to shunt blood back to the heart and core organs. Certain types of drugs, like tobacco or caffeine, can cause arteries to constrict, as can withdrawal from alcohol. Other causes of autonomic dysfunction include diabetes and Parkinson's.
