How long: first question is how long has it been there, and did you put anything on your skin to cause the rash. The simple treatment for red non painful rashes that aren't oozing, is over the counter hydrocortisone. But if the rash isn't improving with the topical for a few weeks, or if at anytime you develop a fever or other systemic symptoms then you should see your dermatologist.

Need a visit: A red rash can be due to many, many things. You need someone to look at your rash, and take your history to figure out the cause. Common causes can be a heat rash, medication reaction, plant sensitivity, reaction to soaps, laundry detergents. It could also be due to an underlying illness, either infectious or other.
