You really can't: Taking an antiviral medication daily lowers your risk of shedding the virus to 1 in 365 days but even then you wouldn't know when that day would be. Wearing a condom reduces transmission as well.

You cannot tell: so it is best to use condoms all the time. Taking a daily antiviral (acyclovir or valtrex) can greatly reduce viral shedding but does not eliminate it.
