Herpes: That sounds possible under the right circumstances. The person would have to have oral herpes and be shedding the virus, and the virus would have to be on the straw which you used shortly after it was contaminated.

It is possible ...: If a person is actively shedding virus - and it can happen even without an active sore being apparent - it is possible that the virus can survive on a hard surface up to hours(in a perfect setting) but more realistically on the order of 20 seconds or so. During that time, the virus can be transferred to you and lead to an infection.
