Possible Heberden's: Women are more likely to get a certain type of osteoarthritis of their hands when compared to men. Typically this involves the set of joints that the end the fingers and the middle finger joints. Initially there may pain but over several months there can be warmth/redness and eventually bony enlargement of the joint which, at the area you describe, would be a Heberden's (bony growth - spur).

Contusion: Did you Jam it earlier or do anything to cause the pain? Think if you did, as maybe you bruised the distal MCP joint. Gout is always a less likely possibility. An NSAID and resting it, may help, See doc if pain is intolerable or does not go away.
