Not necessarily.: Degree or type of pain is not a defining characteristic of the type or presence of infection. Sharp pain is most frequently associated with acute tearing of a structure, acute swelling or distention under pressure, a very sharp object or direct irritation of a very sensitive structure such as the skin or pleura. A bacterial infection could cause the acute swelling or direct irritation.
