A 18-year-old member asked:

Should II take HCl to help with digestion?

Dr. Robert Kwok
Pediatrics 33 years experience
No: A normal stomach makes large amounts of acid, at the correct time, in regulated quantities, and stops acid release when acid is no longer needed. A person taking tiny amounts of acid would find no extra benefit, but a person taking larger amounts of acid would burn his mouth, throat, and esophagus (bad things!). Someone with achlorhydria (lack of acid) can ask his gastroenterologist for advice.

What are some of the chemicals like HCl that regulate digestion?

Not a simple answer: First of all, hcl doesn't regulate digestion, it just facilitates conversion of pepsinogen to pepsin. However, regulation of digestion is incredibly complex as mediated by nerve signal interplay locally within the gut, centrally with the brain, along with neurotransmitters, hormones, a multitude of chemical signaling and feedback loops that all interact with immune system, food, environment, etc.

Depends: Do you consistently work the same shift? If you have erratic schedule, that may affect your wellbeing by disturbing the circadian rhythm. If you stay on the same schedule of sleeping and waking, including weekends, you are less likely to be affected adversely.
