Not ovulating: If you have PCOS, you are not ovulating. If you're not wanting pregnancy now, then cycle regulation is important, and the pill will regulate it. It will also lower your androgen level, and may help with hair growth. The pill should have little effect on libido. Metformin treats insulin resistance associated with PCOS. You may find that you lose some weight on it.

Improvements: Both the birth control and metformin will help you to establish regular menstrual cycles which will hopefully include ovulation each month. This may take up to 6 months. The most common side effect of metformin is nausea/vomiting/diarrhea.It is known to help with weight loss with a low calorie diet. It has been reported to cause both increased and decreased libido, so it's hart to say for sure.
