A member asked:

My grandson is 6 mos old and on neocate and nexium (esomeprazole) for severe reflux. his stools r yellow mucus 4to5 times daily. docs say it can't be neocate.,what could it be?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Underlying condition: Neocate is elemental formula that is very non-irritating to the GI tract, which is why it's used for young children with GI tract disease. Mucus in the stool is often a sign of bowel inflammation, but not always. If a child has such severe GI tract disease as to require Neocate, it is likely that the underlying condition is responsible for mucus in the stool. Don't stop any treatments on your own.
