Anything is possible: It's very unlikely though. if you have both respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms it likely is related to a single process. It's not uncommon for a single infection to cause multiple organ systems to act out of the ordinary. Remember, the flu virus can cause both respiratory and GI symptoms together!

VIRAL: certain virus, for instance adenovirus, may affect both upper respiratory and GI tract. although, usually this is a different subgroup of the virus.
