DVT: Deep venous thrombosis is a blood clot in the deep vein system, typically in the legs. If a piece of the clot breaks off and travels through the veins to the lungs, it is called venous thromboembolism or pulmonary embolism.

DVT vs PE: A DVT is essentially a blood clot confined to your leg. A thromboembolism is when the blood clot breaks off and travels to your lungs (embolism). This is referred to as a pulmonary embolism or P.E.
